About James:

James Cowland is a British artist based in Brighton and Hove, educated at Central Saint Martins and the University of Brighton. His practice is centred on themes of mortality, presence and the space between the inner self and the outward self we present to the world. His work begins with self-inquiry and develops through an intuitive blend of digital and traditional processes, resulting in quiet, minimal artworks that feel surreal, fragile and contemplative.

Cowland works across several lines of inquiry and moves fluidly between approaches depending on the needs of the image. He often uses plain colour fields, reductive lines and subtle figurative suggestion to explore aspects of his own nature. Symbolic figuration appears when narrative is required, while a more abstract and minimalist language emerges when he seeks emotional distance. At times he turns to vibrant colour and dynamic oil compositions to express what he calls the spirit of a thing.

James Cowland continues to gain attention for the clarity and sensitivity of his practice. His work appeals to collectors who value introspective, concept driven art with a strong contemporary voice, and his ability to move between minimalism, figuration and symbolism makes each series a compelling addition to a growing collection.
